Abstract

This study analyzes the linguistic interactions used by characters when addressing Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man. The research aims to investigate how different language varieties reflect social relationships, authority, empathy, and exclusion within the narrative. Utilizing Ferguson’s Diglossia Theory and Hymes’ Ethnographic SPEAKING Model, this study examines the use of High (H) and Low (L) language varieties among the major characters interacting with Peter Parker. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing dialogues and character interactions throughout the film. The findings reveal that characters such as Aunt May, Uncle Ben, and Gwen Stacy predominantly employ Low (L) language varieties characterized by warmth, intimacy, and emotional support. In contrast, characters such as Captain Stacy and Dr. Curt Connors frequently use High (H) language varieties reflecting authority, professionalism, and social hierarchy. Furthermore, antagonistic interactions involving Flash Thompson demonstrate how language can function as a tool of exclusion and social dominance. The study highlights the significant role of language in constructing identity, power relations, and social perceptions within cinematic narratives. Through the application of sociolinguistic theories, this research contributes to understanding how language reflects interpersonal relationships and societal values in contemporary film.
