Abstract

Politeness violations in scripted television can function simultaneously as interpersonal disruption, characterization, and comic design. Previous discussions of Young Sheldon often catalogue maxim violations but give limited attention to how local face effects, sequential responses, and humor jointly construct the protagonist. This study examines which of Leech’s politeness maxims are violated by Sheldon Cooper in the pilot episode and explains how these violations contribute to characterization, humor, and social interaction. A qualitative pragmatic case study was conducted on 12 criterion-selected utterances from Season 1, Episode 1, coded through Leech’s Politeness Principle and interpreted with attention to adjacent turns, participant relations, and interactional consequences. Approbation violations were most frequent (50.0%), followed by Tact (33.3%) and Modesty (16.7%). The violations cluster around unmitigated evaluation, public rule enforcement, and explicit self-elevation. Humor emerges from the incongruity between propositional accuracy and relational inappropriateness, while interlocutors’ corrections and resistance display the social cost of Sheldon’s literal, rule-oriented stance. The study shows that maxim violation in sitcom discourse is not merely a breach of etiquette; it is a recurrent narrative resource that links pragmatic misalignment to character identity, comic timing, and relationship management.
